Knowledge of the Automotive sector is key to a difficult candidate search

The Challenge

DENSO is one of the world’s leading automotive suppliers with nearly 140,000 employees in 38 countries globally. The DENSO Marston site in Shipley, Yorkshire focuses on manufacturing thermal cooling systems for construction, industrial and agricultural applications.

DENSO was investing steadily in the Shipley facility in order to improve logistics, increase production capacity and bring departments even closer together in order to grow with the local economy.

An Expert MP&L Manager

A key role in the facility development was the employment of an experienced Materials, Planning and Logistics Manager. The ideal candidate would have an automotive background, a degree in mechanical Engineering and a real expertise in supply chain and JIT environments. DENSO had contracted several contingent recruitment agencies for candidates but they had not unearthed the correct calibre of individual.

Richard Clegg from Expion had worked with a manager at DENSO in the past and proposed a retained search with selective advertising in order to source the calibre of candidate required.

Targeted Search

Richard’s knowledge of the automotive sector enabled Expion to develop a clear list of target companies (European automotive manufacturers and major Tier One suppliers) from which to identify candidates.

A thorough search was undertaken and a shortlist of candidates was prepared for DENSO. Several candidates were working outside of the UK and Expion advised DENSO on an appropriate relocation package to offer in order to attract the right calibre of candidate. Expion organised interviews for the candidates and an in-depth assessment process.

The successful candidate was a UK national who had been working for General Motors in Germany and was keen to relocate to the UK. He had exactly the type of skills that DENSO required and, although initially unsure about working for a supplier rather than a manufacturer, Expion sold the advantages of working for DENSO and the opportunities for progression.

Additional Roles

Expion were appointed as a preferred supplier as a result of the successful campaign and have since assisted DENSO with the recruitment of a number of positions including a Head of Quality, Production Engineers, Quality Engineers and a Finite Element Analysis Engineer.
