UKTIA – Chief Executive Appointment
The UK Tea & Infusions Association is an independent non-profit making body dedicated to promoting tea and herbal infusions and their unique story for the benefit of those who produce, sell and enjoy tea and herbal infusion products.
The current post holder was moving towards retirement, and a successor was required to take the post from early summer 2018. A nominations committee was formed of key board members to oversee the appointment of a successor, and Expion were invited to pitch for the work.
Upon successful appointment as the chosen recruitment partner, Expion spoke in detail to each member of the nominations committee and met the current post holder twice to ensure a clear and coherent brief was agreed, along with the message to the market. Interview dates were also scheduled at this stage to ensure timescales were met and busy diaries did not halt the process!
The nominations committee were very clear that a wide search across the food & beverages, and wider FMCG arena was conducted, to ensure the widest pool of candidates. Expion searched and screened multiple senior level candidates, and met with all candidates face to face before drawing together a shortlist. This was presented face to face to the nominations committee and references on all potential candidates were sought.
A shortlist of 6 potential candidates were selected and interviews arranged. Caroline worked with the nominations committee to design a set of interview questions which each candidate would be asked to maintain a fair and seamless experience for all parties. These questions were created to show clear evidence of the broad range of skills required for such a key appointment, including behavioural, technical and leadership questions to ensure candidates were able to show their technical prowess, alongside very strong leadership traits.
As part of Expion’s process, all candidates worked with Expion’s executive coach, to ensure they were interview ready, and full prepared for the process. It was essential to the nominations committee that this was not a short term appointment, and the work with Expion’s coach ensured that candidates were also fully prepared for the role they would be undertaking.
Outcome and Results
Following a successful first round of interviews, five candidates were then advanced to a 2nd stage interview. After another successful day, the nominations committee felt they could have selected more than one candidate from the 2nd stage interview but they made an offer to their preferred candidate, which was accepted.
The newly appointed Chief Executive will join the association in June 2018.
